Course description

In this class you will be learning about the craft and artistry of quilting by creating at least 2 quilt “blocks.”   You will learn how quilts reflect American history and culture by researching historical quilts and by re

ading the short story "Everyday Use" by Alice Walker.  You will also become part of Bentley’s history with the creation of your 2nd quilt block and by writing a personal essay about how your block reflects some aspect of Bentley.

 

Expectations and grading:

In this class you will be expected to participate fully and thoughtfully in all classroom activities, whether it is a discussion, being an audience for a presentation, critiquing work, or quilting.  Respect for the parent-volunteer helpers and each other is expected.

Grading

  • 45% You will be expected to create at least two finished 12 ½” X 12 ½” quilt blocks.

    • The first block will be “pieced” using a supplied packet of fabrics, sewn with a machine using only straight lines.  This block will be incorporated into a quilt to be donated to the Bentley Gala auction Due by Wednesday 3/1

    • The second block will be for the 7th annual Bentley Quilt.  This block will be made from a pattern and fabrics that you choose.  It can be a traditional pieced pattern or an original design.  The only requirements are that it be made by combining at least 3 fabrics, finishes to 12 ½” X 12 ½” and that it somehow relates to Bentley School. Due by Wednesday 3/8

    • You will be graded on creativity, completion, commitment to the task, and your ability to work in the classroom.

  • 20% You will write an essay (at least 1 ½ double spaced pages, Times New Roman 12) on the significance of your chosen block as it relates to Bentley school. This essay should be as creative as your block!  You can see examples of earlier essays in the binders in the library.  These essays will be “published” and displayed along with our quilt in the library. You will be graded on creativity and grammar.

    • Ideas Due Wed. 3/1 (may be handwritten or word-processed)

    • First draft Due Thur. 3/2 (must be a shared googledoc)

    • Final draft Due Wed. 3/8

  • 10% You will read Alice Walker’s “Everyday Use” and be prepared to discuss the following topics in class. Due Tuesday 3/7

  • The tradition of quilting in the African-American community.
  • The metaphor of the quilt in the story.
  • The use of language to reveal the characters’ personalities.
  • You will be graded on participation in the class discussion.​​​​
  • 20% You will research a type of historical quilt and give a 5-10 minute oral/visual presentation about the quilt style and how it represents American history and culture Due Weed of March 6 (3/6-3/10)
  • 5% You will be expected to read an occasional handout about quilting and American history.

 

Homework and Late Policy: Deadlines for the personal essay about your quilt square are firm and all steps (ideas, first draft, final draft) are required.  Extensions may be considered 24 hours in advance.  Work that is turned in after the due date will be marked down ⅓ of a letter grade each day it is late. (e.g. a B+ would become a B if it is a day late)  The weekend counts as 2 late days.

Classroom procedures: We will start each class together reviewing our work and going over any homework.  Any discussions or oral presentations will come at the beginning of class.  We will then proceed to individual work on quilt squares.  At the end of each class we will reconvene to clean up, assess progress, and review any homework assignment.

 

Daily Schedule:

Monday Feb. 27: Intro/types of quilts/basic quilt mechanics/using the tools/begin 1st quilt block/clean up

HW: read “Quilt History: an American Folkart.” Highlight, annotate, and be prepared to discuss.

Tuesday Feb.  28: Review reading/finish 1st quilt block/visit library to view past quilts and essays/browse and select pattern/clean up

HW: Draft ideas for your personal essay (paragraphs or bullet points)

Wednesday Mar. 1: share essay ideas /work on 2nd quilt square/clean up

HW: First draft of personal essay

Thursday Mar.  2: Turn in essay draft/discuss & choose oral presentation topics/browse topic  resources/ work on 2nd quilt square/clean up

HW: work on presentations

Friday Mar. 3: checkins on presentation resources/work on presentations/work on 2nd quilt square/clean up

HW: work on presentations and turn in works cited for your presentation

Monday Mar. 6: 4 oral presentations/ work on 2nd quilt block / review essay drafts/clean up

HW: READ and annotate “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker

Tuesday Mar. 7: 4 oral presentations / work on 2nd quilt square / discussion of Alice Walker story / clean up

HW: Final draft of personal essay

Wednesday Mar. 8: 5 oral presentations / Finish 2nd block / work on quilt arrangement / clean up

Thursday Mar. 9: “Sandwich quilt”/ presentations? / clean up

Friday Mar. 10: organize fabrics / hand quilt and sign quilt / clean up /
